The Flood Rebate Program allows up to a maximum rebate of $2,000 based on 30% of the actual cost of the verifiable construction of flood mitigation/prevention projects performed on a residence. Des Plaines homeowners who have had flood mitigation/prevention construction work performed on their dwelling may apply for the rebate. Single-family homes and townhomes are eligible whether owner-occupied or not. Landlords may apply.

Residential Projects Covered

Examples of projects covered by the program include the following types of improvements:

Backup battery sump pumps
Backwater valves in basements or yards
Basement flood control systems
Basement waterproofing
Footing tile with sump pumps
Glass block basement windows in cases where a home is subject to flooding
Overhead sewers
Sump pump connections to storm sewers

Projects Not Covered

The type of projects not covered include maintenance items such as normal plumbing repairs, sump pump replacements, valve replacements, or sewer clean-outs and repairs. For questions regarding a specific project qualifying for the rebate, please contact the Community Development Department at 847-391-5380.

Application Process

Rebate applications are available online or by calling 847-391-5380. As part of the application process, individuals will be required to submit documentation, including bid estimates, contractor invoices and proof of payment. Additionally, a payment of $75 will be required for completed work if a permit has not been previously obtained from the City. Processing of the payment takes approximately six weeks upon final approval of the rebate.
