Unit hour utilization (UHU) is a method of measuring workload in the fire service, which has traditionally been calculated as the percentage of time during a shift that firefighter/paramedics are assigned to an incident. For example, if a unit’s utilization is 25%, they are committed to an incident an average of 6 hours per day. In addition to responding to incidents, crews typically train 2-3 hours per day, and perform other functions such as public education.
“Aid given” and “aid received” both refer to incident responses to and from neighboring communities. “Aid given” means that a Des Plaines unit responded to a neighboring community, and “aid received” means that a unit from a neighboring community responded to an incident in Des Plaines.
