Des Plaines Welcomes Families Seeking Asylum in U.S.

Post Date:10/01/2022 5:00 PM

On Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022, Des Plaines welcomed families seeking asylum to our community. Since the end of August, Illinois has greeted over 1,700 of these individuals as they arrived to our region. These are individuals who are fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries and are seeking asylum, which is an appropriate and legal process. More information can be found here.

On Sept 14, Governor Pritzker issued an emergency disaster proclamation to provide asylum seekers with necessary services. The State of Illinois, Cook County and community organizations are all collaborating to provide shelter, food and healthcare for these individuals. At this time the State has not requested any resources from Des Plaines and will have staff on site at these locations 24/7 when these individuals are being housed in our community.
